Given the fact that there is a growing need to connect artists from both parts of the country Belgium, and that the five year period is an interesting pace to evaluate new developments in the art scene, the organizers decided that the exhibition would be a pentennial.
This time it is curated by Ulrike Lindmayr and Stella Lohaus. From the outset, their approach was to go back to the roots of the curatorial work and establish direct and sustainable relationships with artists through extensive fieldwork. For over a period of six months, they visited the studios of and had intensive talks with approximately seventy artists.
The curators started their research by asking the artists that participated in the previous edition of NowBelgiumNow in 2011 which people to watch. Furthermore, they gathered names from professors at art academies, from established artists in whose studios often work lesser-known ones, and from young curators all over the country. Of course, they also had people in mind whose work had already caught their eye. The final selection was then made according to the text on a 1968 Joseph Beuys multiple: “Intuition (…statt Kochbuch)”, or “Intuition (…instead of a cookbook)”. Hence, the artists and artworks included in the exhibition reflect what Lindmayr and Lohaus are receptive of.
The participating artists include Leyla Aydoslu, Kasper De Vos, Vedran Kopljar, Eva L’Hoest, Hüseyin Oylum, Lisa Spilliaert, Emmanuel Van Der Auwera, Bram Van Meervelde, Sine van Menxel, and David Widart.
The exhibition will be on view until 16 October at three different locations in Lange Leemstraat, Antwerp: LLS 387 and the portal and the ground floor behind it at Hospitaalplein.
