Danielle van Ark

Contemporary Art: Share Moments. Share Life. In Retrospect is a publication by visual artist Danielle van Ark, comprising three booklets, each featuring a distinct photographic series. The three series share a common method: tearing pages from magazines and art catalogues, which are then affixed to a lightbox and captured on large-format film through analog photography.

The booklets showcase distorted, ghostlike images printed on semi-transparent paper, emphasizing the transparency of the pictures themselves. The red booklet draws from pages of Christie’s art auction catalogues, while the blue booklet features art from the opulent Tefaf art fair. The yellow booklet displays morphed camera advertisements from different decades, fused with content found on the reverse side of the pages.

Danielle van Ark explores the opaque systems of value creation and social status in an era where everything appears reproducible and ephemeral. These three booklets interrogate concepts of value, time, authorship, and the nature of the photographic medium itself.

Dark Editions is an artist-run publishing platform based in Amsterdam, established by Danielle van Ark in 2020. Although the platform is still in its early stages, its goal is to release high-quality special editions and publications. These include works created by van Ark herself and collaborations with artists she personally admires and wishes to engage with.
