How do you describe your own art practice?
I practice photography without taking pictures.
My work has been evolving around my ongoing investigation in the immersive qualities of photography as an experience, while abandoning its material substrate. I have been experimenting with a wide range of formats and outcomes such as the silent Walk Pieces, publications, installations and performance lectures.
What was your first experience with art?
Probably Kubikukuri Takuzo (Hangman)’s performance in his backyard in the outskirts of Tokyo in 2012. Over the past 14 years, Takuzo has been presenting a “garden theater” in which he suspends himself from a tree for about ten minutes each day during an hour-long ritual performance. The proximity and distance to which we audience members got exposed, I had never experienced before.
What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Porosity as a spatial metaphor for time in the city.
What do you need in order to create your work?
A lot of time and good colleagues.
What are you working on at the moment?
Just got back from a residency in San Juan, Puerto Rico; finishing a text for an upcoming piece and thinking how to document another piece.
