Martín Soto Climent

Martin Soto Climent (b. 1977, Mexico City) lives and works in Mexico City. Sourcing materials and images mainly from metropolitan streets or urban suburbs, Martin Soto Climent creates photographs, sculptures and installations that in their humbleness look like ready-mades.

Reminiscent of conceptual art strategies like appropriation or juxtapositions, his works are always the result of minimal gestures of re-contextualization and balance. Made by vintage clothes, urban leftovers or collaged photographs, they look like fragile assemblages exploring questions of temporality, desire, decay and marginality.

His work is highly adept at drawing out the sexual or otherwise implicit qualities of images and objects using the most minimal means. Indeed, it is most often the case in Soto Climent’s sculptures that any of the objects he intervenes can be returned to their original state: a little purse can temporarily become a smiley mouth and return to its monetary functionality. The concept and gesture of the fold plays a crucial role in the artist’s practice.
